A Transforming Hope

“See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God … Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.” - I John 3:1-3

These verses are awesome! The words tell us that we have a hope – we are now children of God and “it has not appeared as yet what we will be” – that is, we will be resurrected, able to fulfill the plan God always intended for humanity!

Our hope is centered on God himself: “We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is.”

But here’s something very interesting: OUR HOPE FOR THE FUTURE SHOULD SPUR US ON TO TRANSFORMATION IN THE PRESENT. Here it is: “And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.”

Hope should goad us to change. To repent of our sin. To passionately pursue holiness. Because of our hope, we should strive for purity.
