Be on the Alert

In Galatians 6:1, we read “if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.”

I always had thought of this in terms of “watch out, so you will not be tempted by the same sin.” For instance, if you were helping someone who was struggling with pornography, you might be tempted to look, too.

But I believe there is a deeper warning here. We must also be on the alert for sins like pride: “I’m more spiritual than him. I would never fall into that sin!” Or impatience: “Why can’t she just get it together?” Then there’s gossiping: “I couldn’t believe it when he told me …” And anger: “She’s crossed the line!”

In other words, we need to pay close attention to our character, and commit ourselves in humility to pursuing holiness personally, even as we encourage others to do so as well.
