Grace

The words came unbidden to my mind, bubbling up from deep misery:

“I am not worthy of Your grace.”

My sins, my failures, my weaknesses, my doubts, my fears gave rise to my utter hopelessness. I knew I needed God’s grace desperately. I couldn’t do it – couldn’t do life – on my own. I needed Him, wanted Him, longed for Him ... but felt hopeless because I was and am so unworthy of Him.

If you have said those words – if you are saying them to yourself now – hear this:

It is precisely because we are unworthy that God pours out His grace.

Let me say it again:

It is precisely because we are unworthy that God pours out His grace.

Hear it a third time in the words of Romans 11:6 – “If it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace.”

If we were worthy, grace would no longer be grace.

It’s okay to be unworthy. God knows we are unworthy.

That is why He made grace.
