I see God wherever there is water. He is the stream in the desert that brings life to a barren land. He is the waterfall that pours blessings into our lives – grace, mercy, peace, joy, love. He is the river of life that we drink from. He is the quiet waters and silent springs that well up within us to bring forth wisdom and understanding. He is the crashing waves of the ocean – powerful and mighty, untamed and unpredictable.
As you stand by the water, you can not only look, but you can listen. The creek bubbles and chuckles. The river sings. The lake whispers in the quiet of the evening. The ocean roars with grandeur, or laps gently at the sand on the shore. In the voice of the water, I hear the voice of God – sometimes quiet, sometimes loud, sometimes comforting, sometimes commanding, sometimes reproving, always loving.
You can also touch the water. Feel it move against your hand. Relish the coolness on a hot day. Feel the icy touch of a glacier-fed river.
And you can taste it. Lift it to your lips and drink deep. And in that drink, you can truly understand when God says,
"I will pour out water on the thirsty land
And streams on the dry ground;
I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring
And My blessing on your descendants;
And they will spring up among the grass
Like poplars by streams of water."
“If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”
"Then he showed me a river of the water of life, clear as crystal, coming from the throne of God and of the Lamb, in the middle of its street. On either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations."
"The Spirit and the bride say, 'Come.' And let the one who hears say, 'Come.' And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost."
