“After we had already suffered and been mistreated in Philippi, as you know, we had the boldness in our God to speak to you the gospel of God amid much opposition” (I Thessalonians 2:2).
Here’s a lesson in perseverance! After I encounter trouble, I want to hide away somewhere for a while to lick my wounds. I may even think a respite is my right. But Paul went from suffering and mistreatment right into “much opposition.” Not a vacation.
The courage, the resolve, and the strength to persevere in this way cannot come from ourselves and our human weakness. As Paul writes, it comes from “boldness in our God.”
