In our natural, fallen state, we value things like material possessions. Sexual conquest. Political power. Physical beauty. Monetary wealth. Professional acclaim. The list goes on and on, with these values being dinned in our ears by literally millions of TV shows, movies, books, websites, and more.
But John the apostle warns us in I John 2:15-17, “Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.”
The world is passing away. All that the world values is passing away. But we have a tremendous hope: We are not going to pass away! We are going to live forever!
Because we are going to live forever, we need to get our values aligned with the values of our eternal home and our Everlasting Father. So ask yourself, “What do I value?” (I am doing this exercise right along with you!) Name the various things you value, one by one. Then, for each one, ask yourself, “Does this line up with what God values?” If yes, great! If not, ask “What am I going to do about it?”
